Intervening on a pre-existing building requires an intense architectural interpretation. We believe that this type of project must be approached from an attitude that is both critical and respectful, seeking to fully exploit the initial conditions and potential present in the building we are planning to work on.

The limited presence of natural light caused by the excessive depth of the floor plan (35 meters), insufficient headroom, and an access system inadequate for public use of the building seemed to us to be the fundamental problems to be resolved. Furthermore, several aspects of the building caught our attention, prompting us to enhance them, such as the regularity of the structure, the spatiality suggested by the unevenness of the ground floor with respect to the roadway, and the powerful compositional features of the elevations.

The proposal is fundamentally based on newly created courtyards, inserted along a diagonal section, which provide light to the workspace while simultaneously dividing the floor into recognizable work units. A service strip is created as a connecting element between the different floors, including both vertical communication systems and a large part of the necessary installations. Once this more “efficient” and compartmentalized space was established, the necessary flexibility that a building of these characteristics must offer was emphasized, opting for a system of open-plan layouts and relying on partitions and lightweight elements to provide the final division of the areas defined by the program.

renovation, which, based on the existing, proposes a contemporary image that is easily recognizable as a sign of identity for the building’s new use.
